The Mildura Electorate

The Mildura district is a rural electorate located 550kms north-west of Melbourne, covering 35,702 square kilometres. The key townships of the electorate include Mildura, Red Cliffs, Merbein, Irymple, Robinvale, Ouyen, Walpeup, Underbool, Murrayville, Hopetoun, Woomelang, Cullulleraine and Werrimul. In the 2014 redistribution it grew to also include Birchip, Culgoa, Manangatang, Piangil, Sea Lake and Wycheproof.

First occupied in the 1840’s the city of Mildura is the largest town in the Mildura district and is situated on the Murray River. Mildura is the centre of an irrigation area known as Sunraysia, which is reknown for its dried fruits, citrus and vegetable industries. Other industries in the District include crop farming, fruit, vegetable and wine growing and tourism. Natural features include the northern part of the Big Desert, the Sunset Country and the Hattah Lakes. Mildura is recognised as one of Australias’s top 10 fastest growing regional cities and is the commercial hub of the region.

The region's diverse cultural and economic identity was firmly established following the arrival of the soldier settlers and the post-war migrants from Italy, Ireland, Greece, England and the former Yugoslavia etc who brought with them traditional cultivation skills that helped to make Mildura the important Australian food bowl it is today.

Mildura was soon the main town of the district. Suburbs and new satellite towns sprang up. In 1937 it officially became a city. Today, Mildura is a bright, thriving regional centre, and the surrounding Sunraysia district has a population of over 50,000.

Further afield the lower section of the district is in the heart of Australia’s grain belt with farms typically growing wheat, barley, canola and other cereals. Most livestock in the district are sheep, however beef, pigs and even squab are also farmed.

Destinations of interest include Lake Tyrrell, Victoria’s largest salt lake, at Sea Lake, the Mallee Bull at Birchip or the world’s smallest registered mountain, Mt Wycheproof.
