Scams telemarketing

Do Not Call Register

Recently my office has received an increase in enquiries from people who are receiving daily and unwanted phone calls from telemarketers and potential scam callers.

People can list their home, personal mobile or fax number with the Do Not Call Register to reduce these telemarketing calls. Registration is free and you only need to do it once.

You don’t need to register every couple of years.

To register your phone number on the Do Not Call Register you need to phone 1300 792 958 from the phone number you want to register. You can also register on line at www. donotcall.gov.au.

Some groups can still contact you after you register. These include registered charities, research companies, registered political parties and educational institutions.

If you are registered and you continue to receive these unwanted calls you can note the time, date and nature of the call and phone the Do Not Call Register to log a complaint.

Unfortunately registering your phone number will not stop scam callers and everyone needs to be vigilant in protecting their personal and financial details.

If you believe the call may be a scam you can hang up and try to call the company back on a known number from an account or website.

To report a scam call you can phone the Australian Consumer & Competition Commission's SCAMwatch on 1300 795 995 or visit the website at http://www.scamwatch.gov.au.
