Nationals Member for Mildura, Peter Crisp, is inviting residents of the Mildura electorate to nominate individuals, teams and businesses that have made a difference to the lives of people with disability for the 2013 Victorian Disability Sector Awards.

Mildura West Primary School named as finalist in ResourceSmart Schools Awards 2012

Peter Crisp - Friday, October 12, 2012

Member for Mildura, Peter Crisp, congratulated Mildura West Primary School which has been named as a finalist in this year’s ResourceSmart Schools Awards.

ResourceSmart Schools Awards recognises and rewards Victorian schools, students and teachers for their outstanding achievements in sustainability.

Being effective leaders and communicators is very important to the Sustainability Ambassadors of Mildura West Primary School, who believe that being good role models is the best way to inspire others. Their presentation at the ‘International Kids Teaching Kids Conference’ in Adelaide educated people on urbanisation and the importance of wetlands. At the Mildura Litter and Illegal Dumping Forum they presented the school’s waste minimisation initiatives and urged people to take responsibility for their own rubbish.

Recycling programs are also encouraged by the team including commingled kerbside recycling, shredding paper for the local worm farmer as well as giving food scraps to the school’s worm farm. The Ambassadors use the school blog and weekly newsletters to communicate their messages. It is these works that have seen them named finalists in the ‘Student Action Team of the Year’.

The school has also been named a finalist in the ‘Teacher of the Year – Primary Schools’ section with teacher Marion Vorwerk acting as a strong advocate for student participation and leadership in sustainability activities. She has been vital in shaping Mildura West Primary School’s sustainability initiatives and has mentored a number of other schools during their ResourceSmart journeys.

Three new nomination categories were introduced in 2012 to recognise the positive influence that teachers, student action teams and student leaders have had on driving sustainability projects within their schools and local communities.

A total of 159 entries were received statewide, a 71 per cent increase on last year and participation of schools increased by 35 per cent.

Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith congratulated schools that entered the awards and commended them for their efforts and commitment to be more sustainable across the various categories including water, waste, energy, biodiversity and community leadership.

“The number of entries for the Biodiversity School of the Year category almost doubled from last year and this demonstrates the widespread commitment from schools to conserve and care for their local habitats, introduce native species and plants to school grounds and raise awareness about issues that impact biodiversity,” Mr Smith said.

“We are pleased to celebrate the achievements of individual teachers and student action teams and they are to be congratulated for their outstanding leadership and dedication.”

The Victorian Government has committed $8.3 million over four

years to build on the existing ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic framework, with the aim of introducing sustainability in an additional 400 Victorian schools and continuing support for the existing 742 schools over the next four years.

Winners will be announced at the ResourceSmart Schools Awards Ceremony on the 16 November 2012 and the winning schools and finalists will share in more than $40,000 prize money which will assist schools as they grow their sustainability activities.

Rural Women’s Award nominations open

Peter Crisp - Monday, August 27, 2012

Nominations are now open for Australia’s pre-eminent award for rural women, the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation 2013 Rural Women’s Award, Nationals Member Mildura, Peter Crisp, said today.

Encouraging women in the Mildura electorate to consider lodging a nomination for the award, Mr Crisp said there are many inspiring women working in primary industries in communities across the electorate.

Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, Peter Walsh, said women in agriculture are often humble in their achievements and shy away from seeking recognition for the work they do in their industries and in their communities.

This award is a great opportunity to celebrate the contribution these women make to rural Victoria and also assists them to further pursue their passions, Mr Walsh said.

Past Victorian award winners have put forward a wide variety of projects addressing key issues in agriculture, including innovation in soil biology, food supply-chain improvements, agricultural education and exporting Victoria’s unique products to the world, he said.

The award identifies and supports the capabilities of emerging women leaders and change agents and creates opportunities for women to drive innovation and build resilience within primary industries and rural communities.

It acknowledges women offer a unique approach to leadership, which involves connecting and collaborating to effect change, and encourages primary industries and rural communities to embrace diversity in leadership to successfully navigate future challenges.

The Victorian winner will receive a $10,000 bursary and, with the runner-up, will attend an Australian Institute of Company Directors course in Canberra and be supported to develop an individual integrated leadership plan.

The bursary can be used for leadership and business management training, overseas study tours, establishing business, developing educational or promotional campaigns, networking at forums and conferences, testing information technology initiatives and publishing books.

Victoria’s 2012 Rural Women”s Award winner was Red Cliffs wine grapes and citrus grower, Tania Chapman, who said the award gave her the platform to encourage more young people and more women into the citrus industry and to build on their skills and enthusiasm for change and innovation.

Nominations are open until World Rural Women’s Day on 15 October, 2012 and nomination forms are available from website www.rirdc.vic.gov.au
