Labor and Independent candidates need history lesson

Peter Crisp - Wednesday, November 17, 2010

The Nationals have held the seat of Mildura for only four years of the past 22.

For the benefit of some media and Labor and Independent candidates who continue to trot out the line that Mildura has always been a safe Nationals seat, the history of the past 22 years is this:

1988 – 1996 Liberal Party

1996 – 2006 Independent

2006 –Present Nationals

“The wishful thinking of the Independent candidates is that one of them could control the balance of power in the Victorian Parliament, says Member for Mildura Peter Crisp.

“The last Independent had more than 10 years as the local Member. For three years he was the Labor Party’s best friend because of his support for the Labor government. After the 2002 election, Labor no longer needed his support.”

Peter Crisp says the likelihood of anyone having the balance of power after November 27 is remote, as the Coalition parties will preference the Greens last in all electorates.
