Community-owned clubs in Mildura and surrounding areas face ruin if a casino comes to Mildura.
“Community-owned clubs have told me that a casino would kill their businesses,” says Member for Mildura Peter Crisp.
“Community-owned clubs like the Workers and those in Merbein and Red Cliffs have been part of their communities for decades and will be forced to shut down if a casino comes to town.
“It is an irrefutable fact that more than 80% of casino patrons come from the geographic area in which the casino is located. This is the industry average, as reported by the Australasian Casino Association.
“Another fact is that half of all gaming revenue is derived from poker machines.
“It defies logic that a Mildura Casino would not take business away from the community-owned clubs. The clubs know it and they’ve told me that they couldn’t afford to suffer any loss of revenue.
“It would be a great loss to the district if our community-owned clubs didn’t survive. They are long-standing and generous supporters of community activities and events, distributing thousands of dollars every year to deserving causes.
“Any profits generated by community-owned clubs are returned to the community in which they based. Profits generated by a casino would line the pockets of investors.”
